Speeches have always been about delivering a certain message. The National Day Message is one example of this. It consists of issues and goals towards the aim of nation building. This video will feature texts from that speech. It is then appropriated to a singlish format.
This work is about exploring the idea that identity is a social construct. An exploration of this idea through the structure of Singapore’s National Day Message. As Singaporeans, we are expected to grow, have a good education, contribute back to society, then once stable, have a family, and finally the vicious cycle begins again. Singapore is one of the world’s leading commercial hubs. Its economy depends heavily on trade. It is also ranked high in international standing of education, healthcare, and economic competitiveness. The expectation for Singapore to grow even further means also that its people have high expectations to perform. The National Day Message has always been about giving Singapore an overview of the situation the nation is in. It consists of issues like over population and insufficient local newborns. The message also aims to deliver a certain notion of goals that aims to correct these issues. The National Day Message are meant for the people living in this nation, there is always a certain form of authority, This form of authority has a clear line that can be seen in the grammar and structure of those speeches. Before the speech is being delivered to the people, it undergoes a few layers of editing that compromise the grammar capability of the audience. It has been brought down to a more gullible and conforming level. |
